Great Biscuit Recipe from The King Arthur Flour site
Whether or not you have a vegetarian dog, these non-meat biscuits will be snapped up — literally! The recipe comes courtesy of King Arthur friend Elaine Aukstikalnis, who works in a veterinary office; Elaine regularly bakes these biscuits (which have been "vetted by the vet") to bring to work for "the patients."
2 cups King Arthur White Whole Wheat Flour, Premium Whole Wheat Flour, or Organic Whole Wheat Flour
1 cup rolled oats, regular or quick
1 tablespoon dried parsley or 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
1/2 cup Baker's Special Dry Milk or nonfat dry milk
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 large eggs
1 cup peanut butter, crunchy or plain
1/2 cup + 1 tablespoon cold water, enough to make a cohesive dough
Preheat the oven to 300°F. Lightly grease a couple of baking sheets, or line them with parchment.
Mix together the flour, oats, parsley, dried milk, and salt.
Add the eggs and peanut butter, stirring to combine; the mixture will be crumbly.
Add enough water to bring the dough together; depending on the season, you may need to add a bit more (winter), or a bit less (summer).
To make biscuits using a dog-bone cutter, roll the dough about 1/4" thick, and cut with a 3 1/2" cutter (or the size of your choice). Gather and re-roll the scraps, and continue to cut biscuits until you've used all the dough.
To make dog "cookies," drop the dough in walnut-sized balls onto the prepared baking sheets. Flatten them to about 1/4".
Bake the biscuits for about 40 to 60 minutes, baking the smaller cookies for a shorter amount of time. When finished, the biscuits will be dark golden brown, and will be dry and crisp all the way through.
Remove the biscuits from the oven, and cool right on the pans.
Yield: about 42 larger (3 1/2" dog-bone) biscuits, 60 smaller (round) biscuits.
Tips from our bakers
Remember, these are a treat for your dog, not part of the daily diet. One biscuit is plenty!
It's still cold here in mid-coast Maine!
More 'plow-able' snow is on the way tomorrow. This is NOT good news for our little guy - Tango.
After walking on the beach yesterday Tango goes for a ride in his pouch and the big yawn is because he just walked almost a mile and he's tired!
The wind was coming right at us and it was COOOOLD! Check out Tango in his Pouch...

The ability to maintain and restore optimal health is within each dog. Homeopathic remedies stimulate the dog's natural resources (energy) to ‘self-heal’. Conventional drugs merely suppress symptoms. More and more vets and dog owners are turning to homeopathic medicines as their primary choice of treatment. Homeopathy for dogs has established itself as a medical modality that is particularly safe and effective, as evidenced by it worldwide popularity and its therapeutic results. When using homeopathic medicines for your dog, you are contributing to a more ecological, more economical and a more effective approach to animal health care: an approach that respects and trusts your dog’s ability to heal itself.
What can be treated with Homeopathic remedies?
For your dog, homeopathic remedies are used to treat many conditions such as: allergies, skin rashes, digestive upsets, arthritis, cough, fatigue, minor injuries, over work, stress, nervousness, anxiety, hot spots, nose problems, eye irritations, and many others. Under a veterinary homeopath, many more chronic conditions may be treated.
Are homeopathic medicines regulated in the US?
The Homeopathic Pharmacopeia of the United States (HPUS) has been approving since 1897 strict standards of quality and purity under which each homeopathic remedy must be manufactured. In addition, the conditions under which homeopathic medicines are manufactured and marketed are regulated in the U.S. by the FDA.
What makes homeopathic medicines safe for dogs?
Homeopathic medicines will relieve your dog’s symptoms without causing side effects when used as directed. This non-toxicity comes from the very small doses used in the remedies.
Can I give my dog homeopathic medicines with other drugs?
Since the doses used in homeopathy are very small, they do not interact with other drugs your dog is taking such as antibiotics, steroids, etc.
What do the different potencies mean? (6c, 12X, 30X, 30c)
Let's take Arnica 12c for an example. Arnica is the Latin name for the original substance: the Mountain Daisy. “12C” is the dilution of Arnica montana. “12” indicates how many times the substance has been diluted. “C” (Latin for 100) indicates that Arnica has been diluted using a centesimal dilution scale. So Arnica montana 12c means Arnica has been diluted 12 times by 1/100.
Let’s take 1 drop of Arnica and put it in 100 drops of water. Now we take 1 drop of that mixture and put it into another 100 drops of water - we continue to dilute 12 times to get 12c! The mixture is vigorously shaken at each dilution to ‘energize’ the remedy. The more the remedy is diluted the more ‘potent’ it becomes. This is curious because there is also LESS of the original substance - for example 200c is many more times potent than 12c. At this level, the original substance can no longer be detected by any means- yet it is more potent.
Where do the homeopathic active ingredients come from?
Active ingredients are derived from many substances in the natural world including plants and minerals.
How do I give the remedies to my dog?
Homeopathic remedies come in several forms - tablets, pellets and liquids. All are given orally (into the mouth) according to the directions provided. Homeopathy is NOT age or weight dependent so all animals get the same dose. This is because the remedies are so safe and they work ‘energetically’ to help stimulate your dogs natural healing ability.
For dogs the 'nose' is the main sensory organ but eyes do play a very important role in how a dog interacts with the world around them.
Our beloved Max used to be able to spot a tiny pinpoint satellite in the night sky way before I every saw it. One of Max's nightly routines was to 'check for aliens' before we could all go to bed for the night! It was really something to watch him scan the night sky.

Before we talk about Flax Oil for eye health for dogs - here is why Marlene & I love Barlean's Flax Oil
Barlean's flaxseeds and flax oils are 100% certified organic and have always been sourced from non-genetically modified crops.
According to Barlean's Owner, Bruce Barlean,"Flaxseeds should be unrefined, unfiltered and unadulterated. Science can't predict with 100% certainty what cause and effect genetically altering foods will do to our health long-term. Why then wouldn't we keep this naturally nutrient-rich, raw food just the way nature intended?"
Flax Oil and Eye health in dogs
Omega-3 fatty acids can help treat dry eyes in dogs. Omega-3's are essential fatty acids that the dog's body cannot produce and must be obtained from their diet. Dogs do not eat enough salmon or other cold water fish which have been shown to be one of the best sources of omega-3. Flax seed oil have been shown to have a multitude of health benefits for dogs.
Omega-3 fatty acids can be helpful via three mechanisms:
1. Reduces inflammation in dogs. It has been shown in several studies that consumption of omega-3 fatty acids decreases inflammation.
2. Augmentation of the oily layer produced by the meibomian glands in dogs.
3. Stimulation of the watery portion of tear secretions. The level of omega-3s acts on certain receptors to activate adenylate cyclase which has been shown to stimulate tear production.
By decreasing inflammation and augmenting the oily and watery layers of the tear film, Flax Oil supplementation helps to provide the foundation for the treatment of dry eye and eye health in dogs.
What is Collapsed Trachea?
The dog's trachea is the tube that carries air from the dog's nose through the throat and into the lungs. A Collapsed Trachea is a narrowing of this tube during breathing. In dogs this condition usually affects the part of the trachea in the neck, or the lower part of the trachea in the chest.
We assume that you have seen your vet and received a proper diagnosis for this condition.
How does our Natural Canine Collapsed Trachea Support Kit for Dogs work?
Our support kit contains 3 homeopathic remedies which may help to address the 'symptoms' of collapsed trachea in dogs. This condition is a physical abnormality and these remedies will NOT cure the condition. However, the remedies are well chosen to address the common symptoms of collapsed trachea in dogs - coughing and wheezing.
Let's look at the 2 remedies:
