Liver (Hepatic) Diet

Liver disease is becoming increasingly common in dogs.

Thirty years ago hepatic disease was uncommon. Commercial pet foods contain chemicals that can be changed by intestinal bacteria to hepotoxins. Pet foods also contain endotoxin, produced by bacteria, that can damage the liver. Endotoxins are not as injurious unless other chemicals, such as drugs, are also present. A synergistic action of the two causes liver damage. Very few forms of hepatic disease need drugs for recovery. Most cases should be given no drugs because the liver must metabolize many drugs for excretion, a function that is often reduced by disease. Your vet will advise you on the use of drugs for liver disease. Feeding a home-prepared diet is very important.
