Confused about which diet to feed? If you are new to home preparing your dog’s food, you have probably been to many web sites claiming to have the ultimate and only diet for dogs. Some sites and individuals are fanatical about feeding only raw foods and bones to dogs - leading you to believe you will poison your dog if there is a speck of rice or oatmeal in the food.
Life is not that simple... Most dogs do well with raw diets - some do not - this is a fact. There is NOTHING WRONG with feeding raw diets if the ingredients are wholesome, fresh and organic. Dogs with certain inflammatory conditions will worsen when feed raw foods. Certain gastrointestinal ailments will be aggravated by garlic, raw vegetables and some raw meats. Should we force the dog to eat raw? Of course not - this is cruel.
One size fits all? Marlene and I believe that each dog is an individual. We also respect peoples’ preferences about feeding raw. Some people are not comfortable feeding raw meat. This is OK. Dogs with severe gastrointestinal disorders may only be able to eat tapioca and cottage cheese initially. Later, these dogs may transition to a different diet. If these dogs are fed raw because the person believes anything cooked or a grain is ‘bad’- they may kill the dog. Sometimes a middle of the road approach is the sensible and caring way to proceed.
One thing is fairly certain... Commercial foods (no matter how ‘premium’) are highly processed and end up clogging the internal organs with metabolic waste. These foods contain meat, fat and other perishable ingredients yet need no refrigeration. How can this be? Preservatives? Wow... how much do you need to keep meat and fat from not spoiling for a year? Do you want that substance inside your dog?
Begin here... 1. If your dog is healthy with no major medical conditions you may want to try a raw diet. 2. If your dog has severe digestive problems start here. 3. If you want convenience try Sojourners. 3. If you love cooking and are uncertain about raw - go here 4. Want to work up to raw or combine cooked and raw? Try a combo diet.
ANY of the above diets is better than processed, dead food, converted to a lifeless nugget.
