Conjuctivitis

Cats have an inner or third eyelid. It serves to protect the eyeball and can cover nearly the entire surface like a membrane. It is particularly useful when the cat is crawling through fields where grass, chaff or grass pollen could get into their eyes. If the third eyelid comes down, it is 'lamed' and this indicates illness. You must not overlook this symptom and should take the cat to your vet. The conjunctiva, which when healthy should be nearly invisible. It functions as a mucous membrane surrounding the eye. Possible causes of conjuctivitis are dust and pollen or drafts. Once injured, bacteria can develop and so the inflammation begins. If the inflammation is just in one eye - the likely culprit is a foreign body. Take the cat to the vet. Conjuctivits that becomes chronic may be help by homeopathic remedies. These remedies can work on a deeper level than antibiotics. Write to us for more information.
