Asthma

When a cat has asthma the airways in the lungs become inflamed and narrow. During asthma flare ups the cat can hardly take a breath. There is often coughing, a ‘whistling’ sound during breathing and the breaths are rapid and shallow. The cat will tire easily, especially after exercise.
No one is certain about what causes asthma, although it appears to be a hereditary factor. Asthma is serious and sometimes steroids are necessary for an acute attack. Holisitc vets will treat the underlying problems that cause the attacks in the first place.
Vaccines may be a trigger - if your cat develops asthma days or weeks after a routine vaccination.
Here are some tips from our Breath Easy (Asthma) Kitty Kit:
1. Use Rescue Remedy to reduce stress - add a few drops in the water each day.
2. Treat the environment - cats are extremely sensitive to cleaning solvents, scented products especially - these are  toxic fumes to a cat with asthma. Use natural, unscented products.
3. Gently rub the area between the shoulder blades (use a back and forth motion with your fingertip) to calm the ‘lung points’ during an attack. Use a light to medium pressure (not hard!)
4. Overweight and obese cats will suffer more respiratory problems - check the weight!
