Loss of appetite can be one of the most important indicators of serious disease. If your dog isn't eating and is also depressed or lethargic, particularly if these symptoms come on suddenly, then you need to see your vet right away. If your dog is healthy and active but suffers from a chronic loss of appetite (poor eater)- then the remedies in this section may help.

Often there is a sub-clinical liver disorder (tests will be fine) behind an eating disorder. This should be corrected through diet right away to avoid escalation to a more serious disease.

Some examples of 'poor eaters' are when the dog gets excited as you prepare the food, but when the bowl is put down - what a disappointment - he will often take a bite or two then walk away. Then there is the dog who eats a meal voraciously, then the next day turns her nose up at the very same meal! Finally there is the dog who will begin eating only after some food is introduced into the mouth.
