When puppies are first fed, they need to establish what is called 'oral tolerance'. This is accomplished naturally in the wild when a mother feeds her puppy only milk, then slowly transitions to a simple mono diet of regurgitated food, introduced gradually. Any food that enters a dog’s stomach when it is a puppy is considered a foreign substance. A puppy's digestive system is initially sterile and contains no bacteria for digestion.
