As a dog gets older, the heart grows weaker. This is evident from exhaustion following exertion. Fainting is not uncommon as the condition advances. The dog's heart is able to compensate to some extent for such cardiac insufficiency, but it is advisable to provide some extra support before the condition goes beyond all help.
From a dietary perspective the management of heart disease must contain normal amounts of Taurine and L-carnitine. Beef-based diets provide more L-carnatine than chicken based diets. (see our heart diet recipe in our recipe section) The diet on our site contains normal protein, high potassium, minimum sodium and normal fat.
Valvular disease is the most common heart disease in dogs. Dogs may be also be afflicted with cardiomyopathy, where the heart muscle itself is actually diseased.
The Natural Canine recommends a home prepared diet to help support the dog with heart disorders - however our Cardio Support herbal (see below) may be safely added to any type of diet.
