These particles are very slow to digest, and most will likely pass through the body before much of their calcium can be absorbed into the body. Furthermore, the density of bone meal particles can vary by a factor of 2:1 depending on the particle size and shape--- so you never know exactly how much bioavailable calcium is in a teaspoon or cup.
Animal Essentials seaweed calcium on the other hand, is 34% pure calcium that is contained in very small, porous particles that look very much like pieces of popcorn when magnified. This porosity allows digestive acids to permeate the particles so they can dissolve quickly in the stomach for more thorough digestion. Our Calcium also contains magnesium which is necessary for calcium absorption into the bone.
Bottom line: Animal Essentials Calcium is much easier for your companion to digest and fully utilize--- meaning you can feed less and expect more! We recommend you use 1/4 to1/3 less Animal Essential’s Calcium than bone meal.

Bone Meal
We have decided not to carry the bone meal powder any more – we now carry the Sea Calcium. I’ll explain why.
Over the years we have searched for a safe and organic source of calcium from bone meal. The criteria we always hold to is that the products we sell be organic or as close to organic as possible, minimally processed and free from any harmful or un-necessary chemicals or additives. We were never able to find a bone meal that fully met these criteria. We also like to know the source and purity of all our products (we use them ourselves and for our dogs!)
The supplier of our bone meal would never let us see the tests or truly verify the source of the bone meal. This always bothered us but we felt we had no alternative – they are a big company and they claimed this information is proprietary (what is there to hide from the consumer?).
In our ongoing search for bone meal from other sources, we discovered that 2 major veterinary pharma companies had dropped their bone meal for sale.
The reason?
BOTH these companies felt available sources of bone meal did not meet their standards of purity and safety. The domestic sources are factory farms. Well, this raised some red flags for us.
We have now sourced Sea Calcium which we believe to be a superior product. Produced by a certified organic company, we feel this is the calcium source that provides readily absorbable calcium (and trace minerals) from a source that we trust.
We hope this explanation helps you to understand our change.
