"A dog's diet determines its health and life expectancy more than any other care" - Donald Strombeck, DVM, PhD
These words changed our life in respect to how we care and feed for our dogs. Thirty years ago Marlene and I began our personal journey into eating wholesome, fresh prepared meals using organic and natural ingredients. It did not occur to us at the time that the same principals could be followed for our dog. Growing up in the era for the big dog food companies we were led to believe that if we so much as fed our dog a carrot he would keel over dead.
For some reason only dog food companies with men in white lab coats held the secret to dog nutrition. I had watched my dog drink from a dirty puddle and eat unmentionable dead things off the ground and nothing bad happened. So what was the big nutritional secret? Did I just need a lab coat?
You have to remember that 30 years ago there was no Internet. Finding information was difficult and took time. Eventually we began to wrap our heads around the fact that the modern pet food industry was very young and that people had for tens of thousands of years been feeding dogs 'table scraps' - which by the way was NOT junk food but pieces of meat, vegetables, and grains.
What our research revealed is that dogs can have a very varied diet. They are opportunistic and they do not need every vitamin and mineral every day at every meal. They do have basic nutritional requirements but those are EASY to meet with wholesome food.
One thing that always bothered us was how a bag of dog food that supposedly contained meat and fat could be kept at room temperature for months and NOT go bad? The answer is because commercial kibble is so highly processed and preserved and heated until every living element is destroyed. The little brown nuggets are not longer food. Synthetic Vitamins are sprayed on at the end of extrusion to give it any value at all. It is dead and lifeless material. (I can't call it food). This is not good, my friends.
We began feeding our dog foods that we were eating - whole grains, meat, and vegetables. We knew we were getting all kinds of vitamins from the food - why not our dog?
Within weeks we began to see some amazing changes. Higher energy levels, he lost the puffy fat on his body and it turned to muscle, healthy skin and coat, healthy eyes, no more doggy odor, better breath, no more flaky skin, his incontinence cleared up!
From that point on we set out to help other dog owners realize the benefits of home prepared diets. Check out our other blog articles for recipe ideas and discover our Essential 3 diet supplements.
